Dedicated to revealing Canada's most extraordinary wild places through thoughtfully crafted expeditions
crater-kernel emerged from a simple observation: most travelers only scratch the surface of what Canada has to offer. The iconic landmarks draw millions each year, but the truly transformative experiences happen beyond the beaten path, in places where nature remains unscripted.
Our founding team spent years as wilderness guides, park rangers, and conservation researchers before creating crater-kernel. That collective experience shaped our approach, one that prioritizes authentic encounters with nature over tourist convenience.
Today, we operate expeditions across six provinces and territories, each designed to immerse travelers in ecosystems that few get to experience firsthand. Our guides are naturalists, photographers, and storytellers who transform wilderness travel into education and inspiration.
The principles that shape every expedition we design and lead
We seek out experiences that cannot be replicated, moments that emerge from being present in wild places rather than following a scripted itinerary.
Our partnerships with Indigenous communities and local operators ensure that travel benefits those who call these places home.
Rushing through landscapes defeats the purpose of being there. Our itineraries allow time for observation, reflection, and unexpected discoveries.
Every expedition follows strict environmental protocols. We practice and teach wilderness ethics that protect fragile ecosystems for future generations.
Each expedition begins months before travelers arrive. Our team scouts routes, builds relationships with accommodation partners, and identifies the optimal timing for wildlife activity and weather conditions.
We limit group sizes to ensure personalized attention and minimal environmental impact. Most expeditions host no more than eight travelers, creating an intimate atmosphere that fosters genuine connections with the landscape and fellow explorers.
Explore Our ExpeditionsWe believe that people protect what they love, and they love what they understand. Every expedition includes education about the ecosystems we explore, the challenges they face, and the work being done to preserve them.
A portion of every expedition fee supports conservation partners working in the regions we visit. Since 2018, our contributions have funded wildlife corridor research, habitat restoration projects, and environmental education programs across Western Canada.
